It takes a lot of energy to power a theme park, but Legoland Florida managed to run completely on renewable energy to celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd!
Legoland kicked off a groundbreaking partnership with Tampa Electric by operating the 150-acre theme park completely on renewable energy – the first theme park to do so in the US.
By running on renewable energy for an entire day, the theme park was able to make environmental savings equal to removing 3 cars from the road for a year, or planting 6 acres of trees.
Educating the next generation
The celebration is part of a conservation initiative at the park, with installations that will educate guests about solar energy. One of the aims is to teach the next generation about the benefits of renewable fuels like the sun, and ultimately doing the right thing for our environment.
A new display will be in place at Legoland from June, featuring an interactive 6ft Lego Earth model that teaches guests more about solar technologies. Using tactile solar panels, visitors will be able to affect the rate of Lego Earths rotation.
There will also be an interactive zone with Lego mini model communities running on renewable energy.
Legoland Florida will also permanently power the Imagination Zone section of the theme park on renewable energy.
How Legoland Florida are already helping the environment:
- The park recycled nearly 60 tons of bottles and cans in 2013, along with 176 tons of cardboard
- Throughout the park there are over 180 benches made out of 800 recycled milk jugs
- Each of the park’s 310 trash cans (both waste and recycling) are made out of 330 recycled milk jugs
- Legoland Florida has map recycling stations to avoid the waste of park maps that guests can acquire when they enter the park
- Legoland Water Park has 26 benches and 88 trash cans made entirely out of recyclable materials
